Frequently asked questions

How much supervision does an RBT need each month?

The requirement is a minimum percentage of the hours spent delivering behavior-analytic services that month, plus a minimum number of contacts, at least one individual rather than group, and observation with a client. Because it is calculated against hours actually worked, a busier month raises the requirement. Confirm the current figures against the BACB handbook — this calculator lets you set them yourself rather than asserting them.

Can extra supervision one month cover a shortfall in another?

No. The requirement is met per monthly supervisory period, so a month that falls short cannot be repaired later. That is why it is worth calculating while the month is still open.

What is the difference between restricted and unrestricted fieldwork hours?

Restricted hours are the delivery of behavior-analytic services, such as running programs one-to-one with a client. Unrestricted hours are the work of a behavior analyst — assessment, program design, data analysis, writing intervention plans, supervising staff and caregiver training. Unrestricted activities must make up the majority of fieldwork hours.

Why did my fieldwork hours not count?

The most common cause is too high a proportion of restricted activities, discovered at submission. Others include a supervision contract signed after accrual began, a supervisory period missing its required contacts or client observation, a supervisor who was not qualified for the full period, and hours above the monthly cap.
